Hope this place is active still.

-x^4+x^2+1

Find me their roots. Show how its done. answer is x=-1.27 and 1.27

Hi,

This is done by substituting x^2 = y => -y^2 + y + 1 = 0 => y^2 - y -1 = 0

This is a simple quadratic equation. you can use this step-by-step calculator to get your answer: quadratic equation solver

The answers are : y1 = 1.618033988 and y2 = -0.61803398 ;

Now, we know that y = x^2 > 0, so the only possible solution for y is y = 1.618033988

Now x = +/- SQRT(y) = +/- 1.27 as you said in your original post.
